GEORGE V (r. 1910-36) George readily accepted the first Labour government
in 1924. Following the world slump of 1929, the King persuaded the Labour leader
to head a National Government composed of all parties, which won the election
of 1931. The Statute of Westminster of 1931 meant Dominion Parliaments could now
pass laws without reference to United Kingdom laws, and abolished various reserve
powers still possessed by the Crown and Parliament. This paradoxically increased
the monarchy's importance, since the Dominions (no longer subordinated to one
supreme Parliament at Westminster) were now linked through common allegiance to
the Crown. George started the annual Christmas Broadcast by the sovereign to
the Empire (more recently to the Commonwealth), the first being transmitted in
1932. In 1935, the King celebrated his Silver Jubilee. He died in 1936 and his
son Edward succeeded to the throne. 2. THOMAS JEFFERSON As
a member of the Continental Congress (1775-1776), Jefferson was chosen in 1776
to draft the Declaration of Independence. He summarized current revolutionary
philosophy in a brief paragraph that has been regarded ever since as a charter
of American and universal liberties. He presented to the world the case of the
Patriots in a series of burning charges against the king. In the light of modern
scholarship some of the charges require modification. But there is a timeless
quality in the philosophical section of the Declaration, which proclaims that
all men are equal in rights, regardless of birth, wealth, or status, and that
government is the servant, not the master, of human beings. The Declaration alone
would entitle Jefferson to enduring fame. 3. ПРИКЛЮЧЕНИЯ АЛИСЫ В СТРАНЕ
ЧУДЕС (продолжение). `--or next day, maybe,' the Footman continued in
the same tone, exactly as if nothing had happened.
`How am I to get
in?' asked Alice again, in a louder tone. `ARE you to get in at all?' said
the Footman. `That's the first question, you know.' It was, no doubt:
only Alice did not like to be told so. `It's really dreadful,' she muttered
to herself, `the way all the creatures argue. It's enough to drive one crazy!'
The Footman seemed to think this a good opportunity for repeating his remark,
with variations. `I shall sit here,' he said, `on and off, for days and days.'
`But what am I to do?' said Alice. `Anything you like,' said the Footman,
and began whistling. `Oh, there's no use in talking to him,' said Alice
desperately: `he's perfectly idiotic!' And she opened the door and went in.
The door led right into a large kitchen, which was full of smoke from one end
to the other: the Duchess was sitting on a three-legged stool in the middle,
nursing a baby; the cook was leaning over the fire, stirring a large cauldron
which seemed to be full of soup. 4. THE STEWART ROBERT II (r. 1371-90) Robert
was the son of Robert I's daughter Marjorie and her husband Walter the Steward.
He took Stewart as his surname, and so became the first monarch of the Royal House
of Stewart. When he was in his 20s he ruled Scotland as Regent for his much younger
uncle, David II, during David's minority and again after the king's capture at
the Battle of Neville's Cross, west of Durham. When he finally succeeded his
nephew in 1371, at the age of 54, he was an old man by medieval standards and
had difficulty controlling his nobles, who were eager to renew the war with England.
At 70, he was described as having 'eyes the colour of sandalwood, which clearly
showed he was no valiant man but one who would rather remain at home than march
the field'. Robert married twice and produced 21 children (eight were illegitimate),
and the fact that his first wife's children were born outside the marriage created
long-standing bitterness as Robert III's reign was to show. During Robert II's
final years, his two eldest sons acted as his lieutenants. He died in 1390. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Сленг:
