He was an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon language and Merton Professor of English language and literature. I thought it's enough to be in a list of linguists.
Certainly he's best known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Who knows that he worked for the Oxford English Dictionary or gave courses in Old English heroic verse, history of English, various Old English and Middle English texts, Old and Middle English philology, introductory Germanic philology, Gothic, Old Icelandic, and Medieval Welsh? So what about ballet? |
